  Ashford Castle


Ashford Castle

The world famous Ashford Castle Hotel dates back to 1228 and was once the estate of the Guinness family, before becoming a luxury 5 star hotel in 1939. Situated on the shores of Lough Corrib its large estate has spectacular gardens and trails.

The Quiet Man

In 1951 the famous movie 'The Quiet Man' starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara was shot in the west of Ireland with most of the scenes shot around Cong Village and the local area, where many of the locations can be seen today.

Cong Abbey

Founded in 632 A.D. by St. Feichin as a monastary, this site was chosen by Turlough Mor O'Connor, High King of Connaught and of Ireland as the Royal Augustinian Abbey of Cong which was built in 1120 A.D. for the order of the Augustine. The Royal Abbey of Cong is one of the finest examples of early architecture in Ireland.

Lough Corrib

Lough Corrib is the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland at 42,000 acres in size. It stretches 33 miles from Cong to Galway City. The lake is famous for its brown trout fishing and for its spectacular views with the Connemara mountains as a back drop. Daily cruises leave from Ashford and Lisloughrey piers and visit Inchagoill island with 5th Century monastic ruins.
